Yemen Information Center (YIC) for Research and Media and International Language and Training Institute (ILTI), in collaboration with the University of Science and Technology (main campus, Aden), organized a workshop today titled “Enhancing Job Opportunities for Yemeni Youth in the Digital Age: Challenges and Solutions.” The workshop was attended by 40 participants, including representatives from the Ministry of Technical Education, academics, experts in economics and political science, training center representatives, members of the Business Club, and students.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Abdul-Ghani Ahmed Hamid, President of the University of Science and Technology (main campus, Aden), highlighted the significance of the workshop in light of the challenges faced by Yemeni universities, where graduates struggle to find jobs within their fields of study. He pointed out that one potential solution to mitigate youth unemployment is to equip them with practical experience through targeted training and development programs within community and academic institutions, enabling them to create their own job opportunities.
Dr. Hamid emphasized the essential role of universities in enhancing youth employment prospects in the digital age by updating academic curricula to align with modern digital advancements and artificial intelligence. He also stressed the importance of practical training with technology-focused companies, promoting entrepreneurship and innovation, developing personal skills, and establishing partnerships with private sector institutions in technology and industry.
Dr. Shaima Hwaider, Director of Yemen Information Center and Deputy Director of ILTI Institute, emphasized that this workshop comes at a time when unified efforts and increased initiatives are needed to open new horizons for Yemeni youth in computer skills and digital transformation. She described the youth as the hope for the future and the cornerstone of progress and development in Yemen.
She explained that the digital age has created vast opportunities that have transformed work methods, removing geographical barriers to ambition and success. Consequently, utilizing these technological transformations is crucial to address the challenges Yemeni youth face, especially given current conditions, which require support and guidance to help them rise and benefit from this digital revolution.
Dr. Hwaider also highlighted ILTI’s commitment to enhancing educational processes to meet international standards by offering quality training and educational opportunities for youth, using digital educational tools that enable them to understand technological advancements and digital computer skills, thus contributing to job creation and helping them face economic and digital challenges.
The workshop featured two presentations: “The Labor Market for Yemeni Youth: Challenges and Opportunities,” presented by Dr. Basheer Al-Hammadi, Assistant Professor of Business Administration at the University of Science and Technology and Institutional Development and Strategic Planning Consultant; and “The Role of Technology in Empowering Youth: Opportunities and Challenges,” presented by Dr. Nasr Al-Saqqaf, Dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science, University of Science and Technology, Aden.
